Their main thrust is to make improvement. In 1982 and 1986 the Fennecs was able to qualify consecutively, but after the first round just left. But, these were honorable journeys. In Spain ‘82, Algeria shocked everyone when it beat West Germany 2-1. It was a memorable success thanks to the goals of Belloumi and Madjer. Then a controversy followed, the Germans went on to face Austria, and with Algeria having met Chile in the group stage, it was academic that a 1-0 or 2-0 win to Germany would see both the neighbors and Mannschaft through. It turned out that the score was 1-0 and West Germany won in a game that looked like a no contest. Even fans of both teams involved were dismayed and Algeria had to go home. After four years in Mexico, Algeria struggled. Bothered by internal difference, they managed to get only a point from a possible six, thanks to a simple draw versus Northern Ireland.

The Greens began with difficulty; they lost two games out of a possible three. On the firstround against Senegal (0-1) and Gambia (0-1), but made it to the second round . The Algerians were within reach of the qualifying, but Egypt scored a goal that forced Sudan a play-off. Here Antar Yahia made the only goal of the game, dropping a whole nation in an unspeakable frenzy and left a lot of bad feelings between Algerians and Egyptians.

If Algeria has succeeded in returning into the world scene, it is thanks to the sparkle and the discipline of their young squad. Previously, the Fennecs were often loose because of their lack of consistency and professionalism, but this time things are different. Ad the time of the qualifications, their extent of transformation is notable. They became homogenous and more solid and interdependent. The champions of the continent which are the Egyptians can testify to that. Algeria wins and looses as a professional team.

The team’s weakness is traveling. Since 2003, Algeria has only won two games away from home. Even if the World cup is played on neutral ground, they must get rid of the complex that makes them struggle when their plane leaves the ground. Another thing is that they have no true striker. Ghezzal had not peaked yet while Djebbour is not seen to be world class and Saifi is getting old. This problem should be addressed by coach Saadane quickly if he wants a team presentable representation of the Arab world in the World Cup.
