The big match of Group C gets underway Saturday when England take on USA in a battle between the teams widely expected to finish 1-2 in the Group.

USA's Landon Donovan has proven himself this yearThe England squad is packed with top class players, in particular Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, and midfielders Frank Lampard of Chelsea and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool.

Midfielder Landon Donovan of the LA Galaxy is undoubtedly the most high profile of the Americans. His successful10 game loan to English Premier League club Everton earlier this year surely proved even to his most zealous detractors that he can compete among the top teams and players.

Striker Clint Dempsey, who plies his trade in England with Fulham, is another American whose talents are obvious. And goalkeeper Tim Howard has proven time and again that he is a fine stopper for his English club Everton.
Central defense: England and USA have problems in common
England central defender and captain Rio Ferdinand injured his knee on the training ground last week in what seemed an innocuous challenge. He was soon ruled out of the World Cup as a result and England boss Fabio Capello called up Tottenham’s Michael Dawson to replace him.

Despite a good season at the club level, Dawson lacks international experience and so the primary responsibilities for central defense will fall to Tottenham’s talented Ledley King. Though a fine defender, King is fragile, with chronic knee problems.

Oguchi Onyewu of AC Milan is coming off a knee problem that has kept him out of the game since late last year. Only in recent weeks has “Gooch” started playing again and his lack of match fitness was initially clear. Still, he claims now to ready for 90 minutes against England. Whether his knee is ready only time will tell.
He’s a big lad, Onyewu, and his readiness for a physical battle may be tested if he has to face the likes of stout England striker Emile Heskey whose physical presence can be imposing. But Onyewu will likely find himself at a greater disadvantage against the pace of England’s small men, Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon or Shaun Wright-Phillips.

England will play against USA on 12/06 20:30 in Rustenburg
http://www.topnews.in/sports/files/england-football101_0.jpgNot much of a review for the year 2009 as far as World Cup. The only thing that could be said is that the 2009 season was a brilliant year for the England fans, especially if you compare it to 2008. This England team also has certain weaknesses like the injured Glen Johnson with his knee that is weakness in the right back. But it is still a thrill that the team has a plan. Wayne Rooney looks great wearing an England shirt, Lampard and Gerrard can team up and there are lots of options down the wing. Massive thumbs up for Fabio Capello and a superb World Cup qualifying campaign and no doubt a great highlight. We’re all hoping 2010 is just as inspiring and that we put in a good showing at a certain little tournament in South Africa.
Everybody knows that England’s positional problem is goalkeeper. The left-sided problem was solved by Fabio Capello’s brain and Steven Gerrard/Wayne Rooney’s readiness to substitute. But a goalkeeper’s position is not a job you can solve with tactical tinkering. You either have a good keeper or you don’t.
David James is the most promising when he’s fit but it is rare these days. Robert Green is okay but discreet and has leaked some goals at West Ham. Ben Foster’s confidence is not that high while playing for Manchester United. Joe Hart has chances of playing on the World Cup. Alex McLeish backs in place of Joe for England World Cup. Alex McLeish Birmingham boss believes goalkeeper Joe Hart is in contention for England’s 2010 World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old, on a loan deal for the long season from Manchester City, has kept the sheets clean to help shoot Blues to seventh in the Premier League.
And with Fabio Capello England manager still uncertain about his first-choice keeper for South Africa, McLeish thinks Hart is among the leading candidates.
http://watch-worldcup.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/usa-worldcup-2010-team.jpgMcLeish said that he knows that Fabio Capello and his staff find him favorable.
He already has an edge and his performances lately have shown he can be a candidate. He has a brilliant form and he is looking big and powerful right now.
He has improved a lot since he came to us. He may have had it before but we managed to bring out the potential. Joe has as great chance as anybody else to be part of the England squad. Last June 2008, Hart earned a cap England for his name, with a 3-0 debut win over Trinidad and Tobago. He has already played in some of Capello’s teams but not in any of England’s World Cup qualification or friendly matches other than the friendly in Port-of-Spain.
